Are Eye Creams Worth It?

Posted by Azadeh Shirazi MD on

With the abundance of skincare products on the market, you might wonder if some are truly necessary. While eye creams aren't always essential, they become important if you have specific concerns like puffiness, dark circles, or fine lines. Regular moisturizers often fall short of addressing these delicate issues effectively. Let’s explore why incorporating a targeted eye cream could be the key to enhancing your skincare routine.

Are eye creams actually worth it?

Eye creams are definitely worth it. The skin around our eyes is thinner, more delicate, and more sensitive than the rest of the face, making it especially prone to signs of aging, puffiness, and dark circles. Eye creams are specially formulated to address these concerns and cater to this delicate area. Facial creams may not be as effective for the eye area since they aren’t tailored to its unique needs. So, incorporating a targeted eye cream into your routine is an important step in maintaining healthy, youthful-looking skin.

What is the best eye cream for 50+?

For people 50+, an eye cream that targets common concerns like fine lines, wrinkles, puffiness, and dark circles is ideal. Looking for comprehensive products that contain ingredients like retinol, peptides, hyaluronic acid, antioxidants (like vitamin C), niacinamide, vitamin K, arnica, and caffeine will help the appearance of dark circles, puffiness, and fine lines and wrinkles. Some of my favorite eye creams include:

How often should you apply eye cream?

To get the most out of your eye cream, use it twice daily — morning and night.  Consistent application helps maximize the benefits of the active ingredients. Different eye creams are formulated to address specific concerns, allowing you to customize their use based on the time of day. For example, some eye creams are best applied in the morning, while others, such as those containing retinol, are more effective when used at night. Retinol is photo unstable meaning it can be degraded by UV and Visible light and may make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, so it's best to reserve it for your evening routine.

When should you start using eye cream?

You can start using eye creams as early as your mid-20s. This is when the first signs of aging, like fine lines and slight puffiness may begin to appear. It’s important to use an eye cream with SPF in the morning as the thin delicate eyelid is more prone to UV damage.  Early use of eye cream can help prevent or delay the development of more prominent signs of aging by keeping the delicate skin around the eyes hydrated, protected, and nourished.

Can eye creams reduce dark circles?

Yes, eye creams can help reduce the appearance of dark circles, especially when they contain specific ingredients targeted at this concern. While eye creams can be effective, it's important to note that results may vary depending on the underlying cause of the dark circles.

Dr. Azi’s Product Recommendations

EyeGlowAM is a peptide serum that’s also designed as a color corrector with SPF50 to help hydrate, plump, brighten, and protect the delicate eyelid skin against damaging UV and visible rays. This comprehensive formula is dispensed from a cooling tip to help reduce morning puffiness. It has a copper tint to help mask the appearance of dark circles and works as a color corrector and primer for your concealer.

EyeGlow PM

A comprehensive eye cream formulated with clinical-grade ingredients can effectively address multiple concerns. Look for products that include all-trans-retinol and green tea polyphenols to target fine lines and wrinkles, caffeine to reduce puffiness, arnica, and vitamin K to diminish dark circles caused by venous pooling, and niacinamide and vitamin C to brighten dark circles. Combining all these ingredients in a single nightly eye cream provides a powerful solution for your eye area.

ROC Retinol Correxion Eye Cream

A favorite among dermatologists and patients, RoC eye cream is formulated with retinol designed for the eyelid skin to help smooth fine lines and wrinkles. Clinical results show a reduction in crow’s feet lines by 50% with consistent use.

L’Oreal Revitalift 2.5% Hyaluronic Acid + Caffeine

This formula uses niacinamide and sodium hyaluronate to brighten and hydrate, while caffeine reduces puffiness. Ascorbyl glucoside enhances skin brightness, and hydroxyethylpiperazine ethane sulfonic acid adds hydration, making it effective and gentle for sensitive under-eye areas.
