Understanding the Effectiveness of Moisturizers with SPF

Posted by Azadeh Shirazi MD on

Many people have wondered if moisturizers with SPF offer the same level of sun protection as standalone sunscreens. The answer is yes.

Modern moisturizers with SPF have greatly advanced in effectiveness. To ensure your moisturizer provides sufficient sun protection, choose products with a broad-spectrum SPF of 30 or higher. Broad-spectrum means the product shields against both UVA and UVB rays, offering essential and comprehensive sun protection.

It's also crucial that the moisturizer you choose has an FDA drug facts label, which indicates that the product has been evaluated for its sun protection properties. However, it’s important to note that while these moisturizers can be effective, their protection can be less predictable compared to dedicated sunscreens, reapplication of SPF throughout the day is imperative.

Key Ingredients to look out for

When selecting a moisturizer or sunscreen, certain ingredients stand out for their benefits in protecting your skin from the sun:

Hydrating Ingredients:

  • Glycerin: A powerful humectant that draws moisture from the environment into your skin. It helps maintain skin hydration, which can be particularly beneficial when spending time outdoors.
  • Ceramides: Lipid molecules that help form the skin’s protective barrier. They are crucial for retaining moisture and protecting the skin from environmental aggressors.
  • Hyaluronic Acid: Known for its impressive ability to hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water, hyaluronic acid helps keep the skin plump and hydrated.

Mineral Based Ingredients:

  • Zinc oxide: provides broad-spectrum protection by blocking both UVA and UVB rays, while being gentle on the skin, making it suitable for sensitive skin types without irritating or clogging pores.
  • Titanium dioxide: excellent for broad-spectrum sun protection. They work by physically blocking UV rays and are less likely to cause irritation compared to some chemical sunscreens.

Ingredients to Avoid in Sun Protection Products

Certain ingredients in sunscreens and moisturizers with SPF can be problematic, either due to their potential for skin irritation or their environmental impact. Here’s a closer look at which ingredients to avoid:

Oxybenzone: This chemical sunscreen ingredient has been linked to skin irritation and concerns over its environmental impact, particularly its harmful effects on coral reefs. It is advisable to opt for sunscreens and moisturizers that do not contain oxybenzone.

Octinoxate: Like oxybenzone, octinoxate is associated with environmental concerns and potential skin irritation. It’s best to choose products free from this ingredient to minimize risks.

Retinyl Palmitate: This derivative of vitamin A may increase the skin’s sensitivity to sunlight and could potentially cause more harm when exposed to UV rays. As a precaution, consider avoiding products containing retinyl palmitate.

Fragrances: Fragrance-free products are generally a safer choice as added fragrances can be a source of irritation, especially for individuals with sensitive skin.

Maximize the benefits of your sun protection routine

Reapplication is Key: Regardless of whether you are using a moisturizer with SPF or a standalone sunscreen, it’s important to reapply your product every two hours. If you are swimming or sweating, reapply more frequently to maintain protection.

Use the Right Amount: For effective protection, apply a generous amount of sunscreen or SPF moisturizer. A good rule of thumb is to use about a nickel-sized amount for your face and neck. Ensuring you apply enough product helps achieve the SPF rating stated on the label.

Don't Miss Your Ears and Neck: Often overlooked, the ears and neck are susceptible to sun damage. Make sure to apply sunscreen to these areas to ensure comprehensive protection.
