Top Benefits of Using An Eye Cream

Posted by Azadeh Shirazi MD on

The skin around the eyes is often one of the first places to show signs of stress, aging, and fatigue. It’s also more delicate and therefore more sensitive than skin elsewhere. While a good, consistent skincare routine can be beneficial for the face, the eyelid skin may have concerns not addressed by face care products. The eyelids are also more reactive and face care products may have varying outcomes and sensitivities for the delicate eye area. For these reasons, I believe in formulas that are specifically developed to target the unique needs of the eyelid skin. If you’ve ever wondered whether that little jar is worth the investment, here are the top reasons I see fit to make eye cream a priority in your skincare regimen.

1. Reduces the appearance of dark circles & puffiness

One of the most common questions I get in my practice is “how can I help my dark circles?” While there are many ways to reduce dark, puffy under eyes, my top recommendation, besides a good-night's sleep and hydration, is a consistent routine with a high-quality comprehensive eye cream. That doesn’t necessarily mean an expensive eye cream. Look for formulas containing brightening ingredients like vitamin C, niacinamide, and caffeine to help lighten pigmentation, reduce inflammation, and boost circulation.

Puffiness often results from fluid retention, lack of sleep, or allergies. Eye creams with caffeine or green tea extract help constrict blood vessels and reduce swelling. Many of them, like EyeGlowAM, also have a cooling tip to give tired eyes an instant wake-up call.

While eye creams can be effective, it's important to remember that your results may vary depending on the underlying cause of dark circles or puffy under eyes.

2. Formulated for sensitive skin

The skin around your eyes is much thinner and more reactive than the rest of your face, which is why most anti aging skincare products for the face can be irritating for the eyes. Eye creams are specifically formulated to be gentler, they should be free from heavy fragrances, harsh acids, or irritating ingredients. This doesn’t mean they avoid active ingredients altogether. You may see eye products that contain ingredients like retinol or vitamin C. These are carefully designed to deliver these powerful ingredients in a more gentle, lower concentration that's safe for delicate skin. This makes them ideal even for people with sensitive or allergy-prone skin.

One of my favorite tips for applying product to the eye area is to use your ring finger. It’s considered the weakest finger so it allows for a gentle, controlled application

3. Smooths fine lines and wrinkles

The eye area naturally has fewer oil glands and is more prone to dryness and fine lines. Most eye formulas target common concerns like fine lines, wrinkles, puffiness, and dark circles. If this is your goal, you’ll want to look for comprehensive eye care products that contain ingredients like retinol, peptides, hyaluronic acid, antioxidants (like vitamin C), niacinamide, vitamin K, arnica, and caffeine to help the appearance of dark circles, puffiness, and fine lines and wrinkles.

4. Provides Deep Hydration

Because the under-eye area has thinner skin and less natural moisture, it’s more susceptible to dryness and flaking. Eye creams are designed to deliver intense, targeted hydration without overwhelming sensitive skin. Ingredients like squalane, glycerin, and ceramides help maintain a healthy moisture barrier.

Well-hydrated skin provides a smoother canvas for your makeup application. Applying eye cream before concealer or foundation prevents caking, creasing, and patchiness. It also helps makeup blend more easily and stay put longer, especially in the fine lines around your eyes.

5. Prevents Premature Aging

We know that it can help smooth lines and wrinkles, but prevention is the ultimate key. Using an eye cream early on can help delay or slow down the visible signs of aging. By keeping your skin nourished and protected, you're less likely to develop deep-set wrinkles or sagging. Many eye creams also contain SPF and antioxidants to shield the skin from environmental damage and oxidative stress.

You can start using eye creams as early as your mid-20s. This is when the first signs of aging, like fine lines and slight puffiness may begin to appear. It’s important to use an eye cream with SPF in the morning as the thin delicate eyelid is more prone to UV damage.  Early use of eye cream can help prevent or delay the development of more prominent signs of aging by keeping the delicate skin around the eyes hydrated, protected, and nourished.
