How to Effectively Treat Discoloration

Posted by Azadeh Shirazi MD on

As a board-certified dermatologist, I have seen firsthand how skin discoloration can impact confidence and overall skin health. Whether it’s caused by sun damage, hormonal changes, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, or melasma, uneven skin tone is a common concern for many patients. Fortunately, advancements in dermatology have provided us with highly effective treatments to restore a bright, even complexion.

What causes skin discoloration?

Skin discoloration occurs when melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color, is unevenly distributed or overproduced. This can be triggered by excessive sun exposure, acne, hormonal fluctuations, or certain medications. While some cases of hyperpigmentation may fade over time, targeted treatments can significantly speed up the process and prevent recurrence.

Are there different types of discoloration?

Yes, there are many different types of skin discoloration and each of them require a different treatment approach. Here are the most common types:

  • Sunspots: Dark spots caused by prolonged sun exposure, often appearing on the face, hands, chest, neck, and shoulders.

  • Melasma: Brown or grayish patches, typically on the face, that result from hormonal changes, like birth control or pregnancy, and sun exposure. Melasma is a chronic skin condition that needs to be managed 12 months of the year.

  • Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH): Dark marks left behind after acne, injuries, or skin irritation.

  • Freckles: Small brown spots that become more prominent with sun exposure, often due to genetic predisposition.

  • Vitiligo: Loss of pigment in certain areas of the skin due to an autoimmune response.

How can I treat discoloration?

Treating discoloration can be a frustrating experience, as each type of skin discoloration requires a targeted approach for best results. Whether caused by sun exposure, inflammation, or underlying skin conditions, different types of discoloration require specific treatments to achieve clearer, more even-toned skin. Here’s a breakdown of common types of discoloration and the most effective ways to treat them:

  • Sunspots: Can be improved with lasers, chemical peels, and topical treatments or skincare products containing retinoids and vitamin C.

  • Melasma: This type of discoloration is a chronic skin condition that typically requires a customized treatment plan like SkinBRIGHT®. This treatment plan includes a combination of tailored prescriptions, clinical skincare products, and in-office treatments.

  • Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIE): Can be improved with lasers, gentle exfoliation, microneedling with PRP, and customized skincare regimens.

  • Freckles: Typically fades with laser treatments, sun protection, and brightening creams.

  • Vitiligo: Managed with topical corticosteroids, phototherapy, and immune-modulating treatments.

What skincare products can I use to target discoloration?

It’s important to remember that every patient’s skin is unique, which is why personalized treatment is key. However, there are a few skincare products that can be very beneficial in fading pigmentation.

  • IllumiC with Ferulic Acid: developed with a potent and stabilized medical grade Vitamin C. Full of antioxidants to help prevent the signs of sun and free radical damage, as well as to help diminish sun damage that has already occurred.

  • DermaBright Pads: formulated with brightening ingredients like kojic acid , bearberry, ascorbic acid, and green tea to gently improve the appearance of dark spots. The addition of Hydroquinone 2% to these pads enhances the lightening of the dark spots even more.

  • Azelaic Acid: a powerhouse ingredient for treating hyperpigmentation. It works by inhibiting melanin production, reducing inflammation, and gently exfoliating the skin. Beneficial for sensitive skin types.

  • Sunscreen protection is vital when working towards improving discoloration. Products like Hydratint BB and UV Clear Powder work synergistically with our discoloration products to aid in prevention of new discoloration from forming and diminishing the discoloration that may already be visible.

If you’re struggling with discoloration, I encourage you to consult with a dermatologist who can assess your skin and create a tailored plan.  For best results in completely treating your discoloration or for more complex conditions such as melasma, a medical evaluation and other prescriptions may be necessary in order to achieve desired results.  With the right combination of treatments and expert guidance, achieving a bright, even complexion is absolutely possible.
