Your Guide to Wedding Skin Prep

Posted by Azadeh Shirazi MD on

It’s the MOST wonderful time of the year and I’m not talking about Christmas. Wedding season is here and I love seeing all of my beautiful brides and grooms! It’s not just the beauty on the outside that matters but how you feel during this special season — and half the fun is preparing! Whether you want to pamper yourself with treatments or get your skin glowing for the big day, we’re covering all things wedding skin prep.

Skincare Prep for Radiance

Proper skincare preparation ensures that your makeup will glide on seamlessly, giving you a flawless and long-lasting look on your wedding day.

  1. Sunscreen: Sunscreen is a non-negotiable in your wedding skin prep routine. Whether you're the bride or the groom, protecting your skin from harmful UV rays not only prevents sun damage but also helps maintain an even skin tone, which is crucial for flawless makeup application on your big day for achieving a healthy, no-makeup look. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 like Hydratint BB SPF44 and apply it daily, rain or shine.

Make sure to reapply your sunscreen throughout the day. An easy hack to do this is an SPF powder brush like UV Clear. It keeps you protected and helps with oil control throughout the afternoon – and it won’t ruin your makeup!

  1. Exfoliation: Exfoliation is the key to achieving smooth and luminous skin. Regular exfoliation helps to slough off dead skin cells, revealing fresh, radiant skin underneath. Opt for gentle exfoliants containing alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) to avoid irritation. Aim to exfoliate 1-2 times per week leading up to your wedding to maintain a clear complexion. I have a youtube video dedicated to exfoliation you can find below!

I love Glycolic acid! It’s my favorite exfoliant because not only does it remove build up of dead skin cells that make our skin appear dull, but it works at the cellular level to improve discoloration, brighten the skin, smooth fine lines, and boost skin collagen as it renews the skin. I love Clarify Pads with both glycolic acid and salicylic acid that’s gentle yet effective. It also helps with skin congestion and acne breakouts! Depending on your skin type and other products in your regimen I suggest starting just 1-2 times a week and increasing as tolerated. It also helps with skin hydration so be sure to moisturize after and wear a daily SPF!

Retinols are the holy grail of skincare as they’re the most powerful ingredient at boosting  cellular regeneration, stimulating collagen and hyaluronic acid, enhancing circulation, protecting your collagen, brightening discoloration, smoothing fine lines, texture, and minimizing pores.  If you’ve tried retinol in the past and have experienced dryness or irritation, I recommend Lift and Renew. Studies show similar results to prescription tretinoin 0.025% but without the side effects! It’s also formulated with many other anti-aging ingredients and antioxidants as well as bakuchiol, a plant based ingredient to boost the effects of retinols. Clinical results show improvement in the appearance of lines, pores, uneven skin tone, and discoloration in as little as 4-8 weeks. Check out our before and afters!

To clear up body acne, KP, razor bumps, and strawberry legs, I highly suggest a medicated body spray called The One Spray. It’s the one spray that treats so many concerns making the skin on your body smooth and even toned. Consistent use is key as it can take up to several weeks to treat stubborn acne on your back or buttock along with the scars it leaves behind.

Those with sensitive skin or Rosacea benefit from using Azelaic Acid instead. This gentle exfoliant can help target acne, rosacea, discoloration, and texture.

*Be aware when first starting an exfoliant, purging can occur during the first few weeks. I recommend starting your exfoliation at least 3 months in advance. If you are taking any medications, be sure to ask your doctor before using chemical exfoliants, as combining the two may cause adverse reactions.

3. Moisturizers: Well-hydrated skin will ensure a smooth canvas for makeup application, allowing it to last longer and look more natural. Hydration is essential for healthy, glowing skin. Use a moisturizer that suits your skin type—whether it's dry, oily, or combination. Look for hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid or ceramides.

Skincare Treatments to Make Your Day Go “Smoother”

Laser Hair Removal:

For smooth, hair-free skin on your wedding day consider laser hair removal. This treatment targets hair follicles and reduces hair growth over time. Plan to start your laser hair removal sessions several months before your wedding day. Typically multiple sessions (around 6-8) are needed and should be spaced 4-6 weeks apart for optimal results.

Botox:

Botox is a great option for smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles to give a softer appearance. I recommend doing a trial run 6-9 months ahead of time, then ideally 3 weeks before the big day.

I have a Youtube video dedicated to everything you need to know about Botox linked below!

Microneedling:

Microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment that stimulates collagen production and improves skin texture. It helps reduce fine lines, acne scars, and pore size, giving your skin a youthful glow. Begin microneedling sessions at least 3-4 months before your wedding day, with 3-6 sessions recommended for optimal results.

Exilis Skin Tightening:

To tighten and firm your skin, especially in areas like the face, neck, and body, consider trying Exilis treatments. This non-invasive procedure uses radiofrequency energy to stimulate collagen production and improve skin elasticity. For best results, start Exilis treatments around 3-4 months before your wedding day, with multiple sessions spaced a few weeks apart.

By incorporating these skincare tips and treatments into your bridal prep routine, you will be well on your way to achieving a radiant and flawless complexion for your wedding day! Remember to consult with a board-certified dermatologist or skin care professional to customize your skincare plan based on your individual needs and timeline.

Wishing you a beautiful and unforgettable wedding day with glowing, picture-perfect skin!
