Anti-Aging: Tips and Tricks

Posted by Azadeh Shirazi MD on

Do you want to know the secret to staying young forever? Staying educated. Studies show that collagen production starts to decrease in most people starting in their early twenties and decreases up to 1.5% a year. UV exposure, age, and environmental factors can all play a huge part in the decline in collagen production. Protecting your natural skin structure is really important and the best way to do that is to start incorporating anti-aging products in your skincare routine.

What is the most important anti-aging product in a skincare routine?
A broad-spectrum SPF day cream. Never underestimate the amount of collagen and elastin breakdown caused by UV rays, particularly UVA rays that are present throughout the day and penetrate deeper into the skin.  Because they are longer than UVB, they come through windows even if they are tinted.
A close second is retinol, an ingredient with more scientific proof than any other skincare ingredient. Look at retinoids as antioxidants that help protect your collagen, stimulate new collagen, renew skin cells, and improve texture, tone, and discoloration. Retinol's can be tricky. Be sure to checkout this video on how to use them.

What are some tips/advice people should consider when shopping for anti-aging skincare?

Look for comprehensive products with multiple beneficial actives and functions to reduce the number of products in your regimen.  Using too many products in a regimen especially with powerful ingredients like retinols or exfoliants can make your skin more sensitive and reactive.

Dr. Azi’s Recommended Key Morning Products

  • Glow Serum: An antioxidant serum with a new more stable Vitamin C to help protect and repair the skin throughout the day from sun damage and environmental stressors.
  • HydratintBB SPF44: A broad-spectrum physical SPF day cream that moisturizes the skin and gives coverage like a foundation; an all in one product.

Dr. Azi’s Recommended Key Night Products

  • SkinTyte: Copper lysine peptide serum applied after cleansing to damp skin designed to stimulate collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid by 190%. Works well in combination with retinols and exfoliants.
  1. Lift + Renew A trans-retinol that targets lines, hyperpigmentation, and skin texture. Less irritating than a normal retinol due to the addition of Bakuchiol that aids in reducing inflammation and calming irritation. Clinical studies show it's aseffective as prescription retinol-a but with less side effects.
